Nature reserves

An area of land or water required for;
1) the preservation of biological diversity,
2) the protection and care of valuable natural habitats and species or
3) of great importance to recreational activities, may be set aside as a nature reserve under chapter seven of the Environmental Code. Decisions on the creation of nature reserves can be made by the county council or the municipality.

Nature reserves may include private land as well as state or municipal land. They are created after negotiations with the landowner. The choice of regulations for the reserve which will apply for the landowner and the general public depends on the reasons behind the creation of the reserve and therefore vary from reserve to reserve. If the regulations entail restrictions to the current use of the land, financial compensation will be paid to the owner or, as an alternative, the state or the municipality will purchase the land.
