Nature reserves in Härnösand municipality

In the Härnösand municipality there are six nature reserves. Smitingen-Härnöklubb and Vårdkasmalen are situated on the island of Härnön adjoining Härnösand and are thus close to the urban area and easily visited. Both are geologically interesting in view of the large shingle fields of Vårdkasmalen and the underground caves and giant cauldrons of Smitingen-Härnöklubb. Smitingen is also a well-frequented place for sea bathing.

The impressive Västanåfallet is perhaps the most famous reserve and it is situated in the valley of the river Mjällån in the Viksjö area. The Västanåfallet visitors' centre (Naturum) is also situated here - a service which will provide you with more information about nature and culture in Härnösand. In Häggdånger there are two reserves, Vägsjöknösen and Häggberget. Vägsjöknösen is a reserve close to the coast with forest that merits protection and mires and Häggberget is a lime-soil forest with a rich flora of fungi. In Stigsjö there is the protected Brånsån stream with fresh water pearl mussels and rare lichens in the surrounding forest.
