Prescribed Fire
On following pages you can read more about the County Administrative Board´s
work with Prescribed Fire in Nature Reserves
Forest fire was a common event in Sweden's boreal forest up to the middle-end of 1800. Species has adapted to this kind of disturbances and find their own niches. Many species has decreased due to suppression of wild fires. Prescribed fire is a way of mimicking the natural disturbance that a forest fire causes and the impact it creates. The County Administrative Board of Väster- norrland uses prescribed fire as a management tool to improve the situation for several species and to restore parts of the nature reserves back to pre-industrial conditions i.e. before the dimension cuttings in the middle of 1800.
The objective with restoration is a more open forest structure that is dominated by lighter and warmer conditions, something that favors many species.
